Georgia Peanut Commission attends Georgia School Nutrition meeting to promote peanut consumption

TIFTON, Ga. – The Georgia Peanut Commission attended the Georgia School Nutrition Association’s annual meeting April 20-22 in Jekyll Island, Georgia, to educate school foodservice personnel about peanuts and peanut butter, as well as encourage consumption in schools across the state. During the three-day meeting, school nutrition professionals attended educational seminars, visited with food service industry representatives and received recognition for outstanding performance at their respective schools.

McMillan testifies during U.S. House Ag Committee hearing on farm bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tim McMillan, farmer from Enigma, Georgia, testified today in support of maintaining the peanut provisions of the 2014 Farm Bill and the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) program in the next farm bill. In his testimony, McMillan says, “If the PLC program had not been in place, I am afraid many farms in the Southeast would no longer exist because of the downturn in the farm economy which has plagued us the past three years.” McMillan testified on behalf of the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation today at the hearing titled, “The Next Farm Bill: Commodity Policy Part II” before the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management.

Georgia Peanut Commission increases funding for research projects in 2017

TIFTON, Ga. – The Georgia Peanut Commission (GPC) board of directors has approved $523,496 in research project funding for the 2017-18 research budget year. This action was taken during the commission’s March board meeting. The research projects approved include 32 project proposals submitted from the University of Georgia and USDA Agricultural Research Service.

U.S. peanut industry donates 30,000 jars of peanut butter to Capital Area Food Bank

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. peanut industry donated more than 30,000 jars of peanut butter to Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C. on National Ag Day, March 21, 2017. The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest organization in the Washington metro area working to solve hunger and its companion problems: chronic undernutrition, heart disease, and obesity. The donation was made possible by the partners of the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation, which includes Alabama Peanut Producers Association, Florida Peanut Producers Association, Georgia Peanut Commission and Mississippi Peanut Growers Association.

Georgia PB&J Day set for Monday at State Capitol
The Georgia peanut industry joins together to celebrate National Peanut Month in March and donate peanut butter to the Atlanta Community Food Bank

TIFTON, Ga. — March is National Peanut Month, a time to celebrate one of America’s favorite foods! The Georgia peanut industry plans to celebrate by hosting the 2017 Georgia PB&J Day at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, Georgia, and donating 12,000 jars of peanut butter to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The event kicks off Monday morning March 20, 2017, and will be held in the south wing of the Capitol from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The peanut industry will have plenty of PB&Js, grilled PB&Js, country-fried peanuts, boiled peanuts and more.

Georgia Peanut Commission provides resources to school districts for Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on March 15

TIFTON, Ga. — It is Peanut Butter and Jelly time throughout school systems in Southwest Georgia. The Georgia Peanut Commission has partnered with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Southeast United Dairy Industry Association and schools throughout Southwest Georgia to celebrate Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on March 15, 2017.

Morris elected chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commission

TIFTON, Ga. — Armond Morris, peanut farmer from Ocilla, Georgia, was elected chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commission during the monthly board meeting in February. This is Morris’ sixteenth term as chairman of the commission. He has also served as chairman of the board previously in 1996 and 1997, 2003 and every year since 2005.

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission will hold the annual Research Report Day, Feb. 9, 2017, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the National Environmentally Sound Production Agriculture Laboratory (NESPAL), located on the University of Georgia Tifton campus at 2360 Rainwater Road, Tifton, Ga. 31793. TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission is donating 10,080 jars of peanut butter towards disaster relief efforts in South Georgia. The Peanut Proud peanut butter is being donated to Second Harvest of South Georgia and disaster relief efforts in Cook and Turner counties.

TIFTON, Ga. — Brandon Branch, Baxley, Georgia, was named the Outstanding Georgia Young Peanut Farmer Award at the 41st annual Georgia Peanut Farm Show and Conference, Jan. 19, 2017, at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center, Tifton, Georgia. The award is presented annually to one Georgia peanut farmer based upon the applicant’s overall farm operation; environmental and stewardship practices; and leadership and community service activities.
