Georgia Peanut Commission sponsors peanut farmer in NHRA Series

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission is proud to announce sponsorship of Jeff Adkinson, longtime NHRA Lucas Oil Series competitor, for both his Stock and Super Stock entries. The alignment is a natural fit for Adkinson, a lifelong farmer who operates a peanut farm in his home town of Damascus, Georgia. The new alliance comes at an exciting time for Adkinson and his team, as he is in the middle of a hotly contested battle for the 2016 NHRA Southeast Division Super Stock championship.

Georgia Peanut Bank Week set for Oct. 12-16, 2015

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission and the Georgia Bankers Association join forces Oct. 12-16, 2015, in an effort to promote Georgia’s peanut industry during the 39th annual Georgia Peanut Bank Week. Local banks and financial institutions across the state will honor Georgia’s peanut farmers and their contribution made to the state and local economies during one of the biggest times of the year: peanut harvest.

Morris and Koehler appointed to USDA committees on agricultural trade

TIFTON, Ga. — U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and United States Trade Representative Michael Froman recently announced the appointment of Brenda Morris, peanut farmer from Ocilla, Georgia, to the Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee (APAC) and Don Koehler, Georgia Peanut Commission executive director, to the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade in Tobacco, Cotton and Peanuts (ATACs).

Georgia Peanut Commission increases funding for research projects in 2015

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission (GPC) board of directors has approved $357,570 in research project funding for the 2015-16 research budget year. This action was taken during the commission’s March and April board meetings. The research projects approved include 29 project proposals submitted from the University of Georgia and USDA Agricultural Research Service.

Georgia Peanut Commission attends Georgia School Nutrition meeting and sponsors recipe and usage contest

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission attended the Georgia School Nutrition Association annual conference held April 9-11 in Athens, Georgia. Georgia Peanut Commission holds referendum March 16 – April 15

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission will hold a referendum March 16 through April 15 giving peanut producers an opportunity to vote on reaffirming the commission. State law mandates that a referendum be held every three years. Georgia peanut producers invest $2 per ton to fund the commission and its research, education, promotion and communication programs.

USDA provides one-time extension of deadline to update base acres or yield history for ARC/PLC programs

TIFTON, Ga. — Today Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a one-time extension will be provided to producers for the new safety-net programs established by the 2014 Farm Bill, known as Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC). The final day to update yield history or reallocate base acres has been extended one additional month, from Feb. 27, 2015 until March 31, 2015. The final day for farm owners and producers to choose ARC or PLC coverage also remains March 31, 2015.

The Georgia peanut industry plans to celebrate by hosting the 2015 Georgia PB&J Day at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, Georgia. The event kicks off Tuesday morning March 3, 2015, and will be held in the south wing of the Capitol from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The peanut industry will have plenty of PB&J’s, grilled PB&J’s, country-fried peanuts, boiled peanuts and more.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Southern Peanut Farmers Federation (SPFF) praised USDA for their implementation of the farm bill in a timely manner during the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Hearing, Feb. 24, 2015, in Washington, D.C. Georgia peanut farmers and sheller representatives participate in session one of Peanut Leadership Academy

TIFTON, Ga. — Twenty-two peanut growers and sheller representatives from across the Southeast, Texas, North Carolina and Virginia began Class IX of the Peanut Leadership Academy hosted by the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation Dec. 15-17, 2014, in Panama City Beach, Florida. During the first session of the program, leadership academy attendees were introduced to one another, presented an overview of the peanut industry and attended the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation annual meeting where they had the opportunity to listen to grower and industry reports.

Georgia Peanut Commission seeks National Peanut Board nominees

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission seeks eligible peanut producers who are interested in serving on the National Peanut Board. The Georgia Peanut Commission will hold a nominations election to select two nominees each for member and alternate to the National Peanut Board during a meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. at the UGA NESPAL Seminar Room in Tifton, Georgia. All eligible peanut producers are encouraged to participate. Eligible producers are those who are engaged in the production and sale of peanuts and who own or share the ownership and risk of loss of the crop.
