Peanut farmers praise Senate and House for passage of 2018 Farm Bill

TIFTON, Ga. — Members of the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation are appreciative of the work of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives in passing The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018. The U.S. Senate passed the report 87 to 13 on Tuesday and the U.S. House of Representatives followed today with a vote of 369 to 47. The legislation is now headed to the White House for President Trump’s signature.

Nomination meetings scheduled to fill posts on Georgia Peanut Commission

TIFTON, Ga. — Nomination meetings to fill three positions on the Georgia Peanut Commission (GPC) Board of Directors will be held Dec. 10 in Ocilla, Vienna and Americus. The Georgia Farm Bureau Federation will conduct the meetings during which peanut producers will nominate peers to represent the Peanut Commission’s Districts 2, 4 and 5. The terms of the commission members who currently represent these districts expire Dec. 31, 2018.

Georgia Peanut Commission Hurricane Michael Update: Impact on Georgia's Peanut Industry

TIFTON, Ga. — Hurricane Michael devastated Georgia agriculture during the most inopportune time; harvest season for many agricultural commodities. One of those commodities included peanuts, where 50 percent of the crop had been harvested. The remaining 50 percent is yet to be harvested as crop conditions deteriorate and damaged peanut buying points struggle to regain power to dry and grade the peanuts. Many unknowns remain about the devastation of the 2018 Georgia peanut crop.

TIFTON, Ga. — The 22nd annual Plains Peanut Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22 in Plains, Georgia, home of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. The event highlights the harvest of its cash crop, peanuts, which has big potential across the globe by providing a sustainable and nutritious product and fighting malnutrition. Georgia leads the nation in annual peanut production, accounting for nearly half of all the peanuts grown in the United States.

TIFTON, Ga. — Applications are now being accepted for Class XI of the Peanut Leadership Academy. To be eligible for participation, candidates must derive their primary livelihood from farming and currently produce peanuts, make a commitment to the program and agree to attend all sessions except in times of illness or a family emergency, be between the ages of 22 and 45 and provide a completed application.

Georgia Peanut Commission seeks National Peanut Board nominees for Alternate position

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission seeks eligible peanut producers who are interested in serving as an alternate member on the National Peanut Board. The Georgia Peanut Commission will hold a nominations election to select two nominees for alternate position to the National Peanut Board during a meeting on Sept. 13, 2018, at noon at the GPC headquarters in Tifton, Ga. All eligible peanut producers are encouraged to participate. Eligible producers are those who are engaged in the production and sale of peanuts and who own or share the ownership and risk of loss of the crop.

Georgia Peanut Commission praises U.S. House of Representatives for approving Farm Bill

TIFTON, Ga. — The U.S. House of Representatives passed the farm bill by a 213-211 vote on Thursday, June 21. The farm bill, formally called the Agriculture & Nutrition Act of 2018, was earlier defeated in the House 198-213 on May 18. The U.S. Senate is expected to consider the farm bill this week.

U.S. Senate Ag Committee passes 2018 Farm Bill

TIFTON, Ga. — The U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry marked up the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 and delivered on promises for bipartisan legislation from Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, and Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan. The farm bill as it is more commonly known, passed through committee today with a 20-1 vote.

Georgia Peanut Commission referendum passes by 94 percent – highest ever

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission’s 2018 referendum was held March 16 through April 16 and received reaffirmation with a vote of 94.02 percent, the highest the commission has received in its nearly 57-year existence. Armond Morris, peanut farmer from Tifton, Georgia, and GPC chairman, is proud to know his fellow peanut farmers have confidence in the commission and its activities.

Georgia Peanut Commission increases funding for research projects in 2018

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission (GPC) board of directors has approved $581,896 in research project funding for the 2018-19 research budget year. This action was taken during the commission’s March board meeting. The research projects approved include 34 project proposals submitted from the University of Georgia and USDA Agricultural Research Service.

Georgia Peanut Commission holds referendum March 16 - April 16

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission will hold a referendum March 16 through April 16 giving peanut producers an opportunity to vote on reaffirming the commission. State law mandates that a referendum be held every three years. Georgia peanut producers invest $2 per ton to fund the commission and its research, education, promotion and communication programs.

Georgia PB&J Day set for Monday at State Capitol

TIFTON, Ga. — March is National Peanut Month, a time to celebrate one of America’s favorite foods! The Georgia peanut industry plans to celebrate by hosting the 2018 Georgia PB&J Day at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, Georgia, and donating 10,080 jars of peanut butter to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The event kicks off Monday morning March 12, 2018, and will be held in the south wing of the Capitol from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The peanut industry will have plenty of PB&Js, country-fried peanuts, peanut candy and more.

Budget Agreement Eliminates Generic Base

TIFTON, Ga. — Congress cleared a budget agreement and disaster-aid package that has a significant impact on farmers for the 2018 crop year. The budget agreement passed the House by a vote of 240 to 186 and passed the Senate by a vote of 71 to 28. The President has also signed the legislation.

Burch and Boddiford renominated for Georgia Peanut Commission board

TIFTON, Ga. — Tim Burch, Baker County farmer, and Joe Boddiford, Screven County farmer, were both renominated without opposition to the Georgia Peanut Commission board of directors at nomination meetings held on Dec. 14, 2017. The Georgia Farm Bureau Federation conducted the nomination meetings for the commission’s district one and three.
