PB&J Day set at the Capitol set for March 4

Released: March 3, 2009

ATLANTA, Ga. – For the thirteenth consecutive year, free peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will be handed out under the Gold Dome to help Georgians celebrate National Peanut Month (South Wing – 2nd floor). This year’s annual PB&J Day at the Capitol is being held from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Featured speakers will include event co-chairmen, State Senator John Bulloch and State Representative Gerald Greene, Representative Tom McCall and Commissioner Tommy Irvin.

“We’ll be serving peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – regular and grilled – and a pint of milk. First come, first served. We’ll serve until we run out,” says Terry Pickle of the Georgia Peanut Producers Association, which sponsors PB&J Day.

Gov. Sonny Perdue will participate by signing a Proclamation, Pickle says. Throughout the day, representatives from the peanut industry and agriculture in general will be on hand to educate legislators, the staff, the media and the general public about the importance of Georgia’s crops to the state’s economy.

Representatives from the National Peanut Buying Points Association, the Peanut Institute, Georgia Peanut Producers, Georgia Peanut Commission, Ye Old World/Nuts For You, USDA – National Peanut Lab, Hardy Farms, Kroger Food and Tara Foods will be on hand with wonderful peanut goodies for the tasting. The Worth County peanut queens will be in attendance and handing out fresh made peanut butter cookies.

“We’ll have lots of wonderful different types of peanut samples, promotions and health information available,” Pickle says. “PB&J Day is a fun way to celebrate the importance of peanuts to Georgia. It’s always a popular event. Everyone who visits the South Wing that day, whether they are students, lawmakers or just regular visitors, can enjoy a peanut butter sandwich (regular or grilled) and a glass of milk. We’ve served more than 1,500 sandwiches at past events.”

PB&J Day serves as the highlight of National Peanut Month, Pickle said, adding that Georgia produces over 40 percent of the total peanut supply in the United States.
Sponsors of this event are: Advanced Trailer, American Peanut Growers Group, Bayer CropSciences, Birdsong Peanut Co., Circle One Global, Damascus Peanut Co., Georgia Agribusiness Council, GFA Peanut Association, Georgia Peanut Commission, Georgia Peanut Producers Association, Golden Peanut Co, KMC, Kroger, National Peanut Buying Point Association, The Peanut Institute, Session Peanut Co., Southwest Georgia Farm Credit, Tara Foods and Universal Blanchers.
