TIFTON, Georgia— You can best value research by a simple
statement, “every dollar saved by a farmer through
innovations in research is another dollar of profit.” To
learn more about the research funded by the Georgia Peanut
Commission join other farmers at the commission’s annual
research report day Wednesday, February 11, 2004, at 9:00
a.m. at the National Environmentally Sound Production Agriculture
Laboratory (NESPAL) in Tifton, Ga.
Research is vital to the future of peanut farming in Georgia
and the nation and that’s why it is the commission’s
second largest program area. Yields stayed at the same level
prior to the commission being formed. Since the peanut commission
was formed yields have increased from 1,000 pounds per acre
to more than 3,000 pounds per acre today. In addition to
record yields, the quality of peanuts is better today than
ever.
“
Research is one of the key ingredients to long-term profitability
in the production of peanuts. Many factors will change but
research that relates to increased production or reduced
costs will be the foundation to ensure profitability,” says
Joe Boddiford, GPC Research Committee chairman. “The
commission typically supports a wide range of projects which
cover all aspects of peanut production ranging from peanut
breeding to tomato spotted wilt virus and to tillage, chemical
and harvest management decisions.”
